Who is the Santelle test useful for?

Santelle is for anyone with a vagina who wants to better understand their intimate balance.

It is especially useful if you feel discomfort (itching, burning, unusual discharge or odour), if you have recurring infections and want to know whether it is the same imbalance, or if you are planning a pregnancy and want to look after your vaginal microbiome.

It is also simply for those who want to check that everything is fine, without waiting for an appointment.

What is a vaginal self-test and what is it for?

A vaginal self-test is a test you do yourself, at home or in a pharmacy, using a sample taken with a swab.

It analyses certain markers in vaginal secretions to point you towards a possible imbalance, such as thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

Santelle is a CE-certified in vitro diagnostic medical device (IVDR): it helps you see more clearly and know when to see a doctor, without replacing the advice of a healthcare professional.

Is the Santelle vaginal test painful?

No. The sample is taken with a soft swab, inserted only a few centimetres into the vagina, a bit like a tampon.

Most people feel no pain at all, at most a slightly unusual sensation for a few seconds.

If you feel any pain, stop taking the sample and talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

Is it hard to do on your own?

Not at all, the test is designed to be done on your own, in complete privacy. The box contains everything you need: a swab, a tube with the test liquid, a test card and an illustrated step-by-step leaflet.

The Santelle app also guides you through every step. It all takes less than 10 minutes.

If you would rather have support, you can also take the test in a pharmacy with your pharmacist, with no prescription or appointment.

How does the vaginal test detect a vaginal infection?

The test has three steps. First you take a sample with the swab, then you dip it into the tube containing the test liquid.

You then place a few drops on the test card. Within 10 minutes, the card reacts to 6 biomarkers linked to the most common vaginal imbalances.

You scan or enter the result in the Santelle app, which interprets it and explains what it means: thrush, bacterial vaginosis, another microbiome imbalance, or a normal balance.

Is a self-test for thrush or bacterial vaginosis reliable?

Santelle is CE-certified under the European regulation on in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDR), which sets strict performance and safety requirements.

For a reliable result, follow the leaflet carefully: avoid taking the test during your period.

As with any test, a result should be read together with your symptoms. If in doubt, see a healthcare professional.

Is my data confidential?

Yes. Your results and your health information belong to you.

Santelle does not sell or share your data with third parties. You can view, export or delete your data at any time from the app. Delivery is also discreet: the parcel does not mention its contents.

What if I notice something abnormal?

If your result shows an imbalance, the app explains what it means and tells you the next steps, for example speaking to your pharmacist or making an appointment with your doctor or gynaecologist.

See a doctor without delay if you have a fever, lower abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, if you are pregnant and have symptoms, or if symptoms persist despite treatment.

Santelle helps you arrive at your appointment with concrete information, but does not replace medical advice.

How often should you take a vaginal test?

There is no single answer: it all depends on your situation.

You can take a test as soon as unusual symptoms appear, after treatment to check that your balance has returned, or regularly if you have recurring infections, to follow how things change in the app.

Which biomarkers does the Santelle vaginal test analyse?

Santelle analyses 6 biomarkers in your vaginal secretions to point towards thrush, bacterial vaginosis or another imbalance.

pH: the acidity of the flora, which often rises when there is an imbalance.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2): produced by protective lactobacilli; a low level signals a weakened flora.
Leukocyte esterase: reveals inflammation.
Sialidase: associated with bacterial vaginosis.
β-glucuronidase: linked to other bacterial infections.
N-acetylglucosaminidase: can indicate the presence of yeasts (Candida), which cause thrush.

It is the combination of these markers, together with your symptoms, that allows the Santelle app to give you a clear reading. This result is indicative: if symptoms persist or are unusual, see a healthcare professional.
